Asian Investment markets see quiet start to 2010
• China witnessed a steady month with investor sentiment remaining upbeat. The government introduced a number of policies to cool the market whilst the period also witnessed municipal governments in various cities clamp down on developers hoarding land. Insurance companies continued to search for suitable assets with some forming partnerships with local developers on projects.
• Activity in Hong Kong remained at a fairly moderate level in January as the period witnessed a few isolated small to medium sized deals. Local buyers dominated most of the activity and snapped up properties for long term investment, whilst a number of international institutional funds were also seen returning to the market to scout for suitable investment objects.
• Japan saw a positive month with improved investor sentiment and a steady flow of mostly small and medium sized transactions. The period witnessed a noticeable rise in interest from overseas investors, particularly those from Europe, and also saw the completion of some deals in regional cities which to date have seen very limited activity.
