Bangkok Retail – Tesco Lotus Turned Into Mall

By on Oct 03, 2014 in Retail

Ek-Chai Distribution System Co, operator of the Tesco Lotus chain, has spent 1 billion baht to turn its hypermarket in Nonthaburi’s Bang Yai district into a shopping mall in response to intensifying competition in the area. Property director Sompong Rungnirattisai said the company officially reopened the Tesco Lotus Bang Yai branch after changing it to the Plus Mall shopping complex.

“Adjustment of the Tesco Lotus Bang Yai branch is in response to changes in the local customer make-up,” Mr Sompong said.  “We found there to be more middle-income earners living nearby, and they prefer to buy everything under one roof.”  He said consumers had more shopping alternatives today, particularly online, and less time to shop. Bang Yai has a competitive retail market, with many new malls.

Tesco Lotus has five retail store formats — hypermarkets, Tesco Express, Talad Lotus, Tesco Extra and Plus Mall. It has almost 1,800 branches in all retail formats covering 2 million sq m of space.
