Bangkok Transit System Bids for 43 New Trains

By on Nov 03, 2015 in Industrial

Bangkok Mass Transit System, operator of the elevated Skytrain network, has opened bidding to buy 43 trains at 10 billion baht. This is for current routes and 2 planned.

“We’re considering whether to buy all of them at once or buy only the first lot of seven trains for the current network, if we decide to buy them all, this may be the biggest train purchase ever for Thailand.” said Surapong Laoha-Unya, Chief Executive Officer of Bangkok Mass Transit (BTS). BTS is expected to award the contract early next year, Mr Surapong said.

“We see high demand to ship agricultural products from the northeastern plantation fields to the port. The cost for rail shipment is much lower than by car. That will help the nation increase its competitiveness.”

Tim Leelahaphan, an economist at Maybank Kim Eng Securities Thailand Plc, said the project should help make the capital more liveable.
