CRC beats competition in bid to run FamilyMart

By on Aug 29, 2012 in Property News

Central Retail Corporation (CRC), the country’s largest retailer, has won the bid to operate the FamilyMart convenience store chain in Thailand, challenging the current market dominance of CP All’s 7-Eleven.

CRC beat Berli Jucker and the Saha Group to get the franchising rights to operate 713 FamilyMart convenience stores in Thailand.

A market analyst in the retail industry said CRC gained the opportunity to run FamilyMart because it has been involved in the retail business for over six decades with a wide experience in managing hypermarkets, supermarkets and mini-marts.

The Central Group founded Central Mini Mart two decades ago, a few years before the establishment of the 7-Eleven convenience store chain in Thailand.

After Central established its mini-mart, the group also branched out into the hypermarket business with the Big C brand.

Two top executives from 7-Eleven convenience store chain including Preecha Ekkunagul, currently president of Robinson Department Store, were recruited to run and manage Big C Supercentre.

While Big C Supercentre has performed better than Central Mini Mart, it created a manpower problem for the group. Consequently Central decided to stop operating Central Mini Mart and focused on Big C.

It sold around 50 Central Mini Mart outlets to Siam FamilyMart Co, a joint venture between FamilyMart of Japan, Robinson Department Store and the Saha Group.
