Koh Samui touted for Mice

KOH SAMUI : The Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) sees potential for Koh Samui as a beach and meeting destination similar to Hawaii or Hong Kong.

“Facilities in Samui such as hotels, natural attractions and activities are excellent, and the island can claim it is the Hawaii of Asia,” said Tadashi Yamaguchi, JATA’s deputy general manager for outbound travel promotion.

Samui is a top destination of Japanese tourists. JATA and the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) have worked closely to boost tourists from Japan, especially meeting and incentive (MI) travellers.

Thailand is an important production base for Japan. The association estimates that 60% of Japanese arrivals to Thailand are business travellers.

Last year, Japanese arrivals totalled 1.2 million, or 7% of all arrivals.

“We strongly believe that we can boost the figure to 2 million by 2016,” said Mr Yamaguchi. “Today, the most popular destinations for Japanese tourists are China, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Hong Kong.”

Mr Yamaguchi suggests Thai operators offer CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities such as team building and events with a globalisation theme.

“But a key risk is local political problems,” he said. “The media is a key channel to communicate the real situation to people outside the country about this issue.”

Thongchai Sridama, the TCEB’s acting president, calls Samui a luxury meeting and incentive destination. The bureau is offering packages for companies taking part in the Connections Plus 2012 event. Cash payments of US$2,012 per group will subsidise all groups of 30 or more who confirm by Dec 31, 2012, and hold events on the island by March 31, 2013.
