Siam Makro enters the mini-mart fray

By on Aug 27, 2012 in Property News

Siam Makro Plc, local operator of the Makro cash-and-carry store chain, has added mini-marts to its portfolio in a bid to expand its customer base, challenging the Charoen Pokphand Group’s CF Fresh Mart chain.

The new Siam Frozen shop in Udon Thani is fully stocked with frozen food items. Siam Makro, the operator, is testing the waters as a new player in Thailand’s lucrative mini-mart segment.

Chief executive Suchada Ithijarukul said Makro opened the first 6-million-baht Siam Frozen mini-mart in Chiang Mai province last year, with space of 100 square metres.

Three more branches have opened since then, in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Udon Thani and Nakhon Ratchasima provinces.

These four Siam Frozen outlets are testing demand from hotels, restaurants and catering businesses before the company starts opening the mini-marts nationwide.

Each Siam Frozen shop, with area of 100-150 sq m, will be located near a wet market to meet demand from those customers for frozen foods.

Siam Frozen shops are aimed at enhancing Makro’s leadership in the frozen food sector and cashing in on sharply rising demand in this country for frozen foods.

Mrs Suchada said SHV Holdings NV is already interested in continuing its investment in Thailand, which it considers to be the centre of Asean.

With the Asean Economic Community slated for 2015, she is considering Makro stores in Asean neighbours.
