Thai hotels among Accor’s top performers

Accor Group, one of the world’s leading hotel chains, is confident Thailand is among its best performers in Asia Pacific this year in terms of revenue per available room (RevPar), thanks to the ongoing tourism boom, political stability, and no natural disasters.

Its RevPar rate is projected to grow nearly 20 per cent for the whole year. In the first five months of this year, Accor’s growth rate was 18 per cent year-on-year. In 2012, it rose 15 per cent from the previous year.

The trend reflects Thailand’s still strong tourism prospects with an inflow of foreign tourists. External factors, especially the sluggish economy in the US and Europe and also the economic slowdown in China have not hurt this tourism trend, according to Patrick Basset, Accor’s senior vice-president for Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Philippines.

Accor now operates 50 properties across the country under 8 hotel brands: Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery, Grand Mercure, Novotel, Mercure, Ibis, and Ibis Styles, covering luxury and upscale, mid-scale, and economy.

Its average occupancy rate is projected at 77 per cent this year, similar to the industry record.

In addition, there are eight properties under construction. Economy hotel segments will be in focus due to a high potential and limited players in the market. At present, there are only 30 branded economy and budget hotels in Thailand, mainly in the major tourism destination. They include Ibis – with nine openings — and Ibis Styles with one.

Asian tourists, especially Chinese, like shopping sprees and spend less time in their rooms. It is not essential then for properties to pay more on their rooms, paving the way for economy hotel market growth, he said.

Accor marks its 25th anniversary in Thailand this year.
