Koh Samui, Thailand has become the newest retail property for Central Pattana Plc (CPN), the SET-listed property and retail development arm of the Central Group of Companies, with today’s opening of its shopping mall on the resort island. The 37-rai CentralFestival Samui was built at a cost of 3.1 billion baht. Located in Chaweng, the island’s main business area, the company’s 24th retail project has a gross floor area of 90,000 square metres.

Isareit Chirathivat, CPN’s assistant vice-president for business development, said it choose Koh Samui due to the absence there of any other organised retail complex. The island has also seen dramatic growth in residential property development.

“We want CentralFestival Samui to be a new landmark for the island, standing out in terms of design and extensiveness of offerings, which will respond well to needs of local residents and tourists,” Mr Isareit said.

Mr Isareit, who was chosen to lead the project, said the mall’s design under the Reminiscence of Southern Lifestyle concept features unique elements and details for Koh Samui. Its architecture is inspired by the vintage Chaweng port, which can be seen through the use of charming decorations such as bird cages. These will remind people of Samui residents’ daily lives. It also has Sino-Portuguese influences, showcasing colonial-style architecture.
